History
and Philosophy.
Nordic Care Services Ltd (NCS), based in Canterbury, Kent,
was formed as a partnership in 1998 by Sonja Waara-Conway,
BSc, MA., the current Managing Director, and became a limited
company in 2002. After completing her university education
in Umea, Sweden, Sonja spent 25 years pursuing an international
career in administration and finance before settling in
England in 1993. Having conducted a comparison of health
care strategies in Sweden and the UK, Sonja was struck by
the relative lack of development of fall prevention interventions
in the UK whereas considerable resources had been devoted
to this area over many years in Sweden. Fall prevention
initiatives and associated simple moving and handling innovations
have remained at the core of NCS interests and partnerships
have been formed with the major Swedish manufacturers in
order to make appropriate, cost-effective equipment available
to the British health care consumer.
NCS does not employ a sales force nor does it operate from
expensive high street premises. Instead the NCS philosophy
is based upon the provision of a personal information and
advisory service to private individuals and health care
professionals to enable them to make an informed choice
from a range of proven, high-quality, Swedish commercial
products. This approach is reinforced by an ongoing programme
of workshops/seminars on the Swedish strategy for fall prevention
and moving and handling innovation conducted at the request
of groups of healthcare professionals, e.g. occupational
therapists, physiotherapists, etc
